Questions
Is my photo sent anywhere?
No. Reading your photo and making the ID photo both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a photo.
Which sizes can it make?
Passport and My Number Card (35 × 45 mm), driver's license (24 × 30 mm), résumé (30 × 40 mm), and a size of your own from 10 to 100 mm. The photo is a JPEG at 300 dpi: 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels.
How many photos fit on the L-size sheet?
4 of 35 × 45 mm, 4 of 30 × 40 mm and 9 of 24 × 30 mm. Convenience-store prints and many printers cut off or cannot print about 3 to 5 mm at the edges of the paper, so the photos, the lines for cutting and the 10 mm scale stay at least 5 mm from the edges. The photos are at least 2 mm apart, each with a gray line around it for cutting.
What should I mind when printing?
Print at actual size, and do not use "fit to page" or borderless printing: they change the size. After printing, measure the 10 mm scale with a ruler.
What is the photo for online applications?
For passports, a JPEG of 600 × 730 pixels and 600 KB or less. It is a little wider than 35 × 45 mm, so it shows a little more on the left and right at the same height. For My Number Cards, a JPEG with the shape of 35 × 45 mm (from 483 × 621 to 840 × 1,080 pixels, 20 KB to 7 MB).
Can it make the background white or the face brighter?
No. The background is not changed and the photo is not retouched, because some offices refuse photos with an edited background. Take the photo in front of a plain wall, in good light.
Does the location or other hidden information stay?
No. The saved files have no location, date or device information. The photo and the sheet carry a mark of 300 dpi, the size to print at.
What are the saved files called?
The photo is "id-photo.jpg", the sheet "id-photo-sheet.jpg", and the photo for online applications "id-photo-online.jpg". The original file name is not used.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes. Move the photo with your finger, and change its size with two fingers. Inside apps such as LINE, saving may not work. If so, open the page again in Safari or Chrome.
Limits
- The office that asks for the photo decides in the end whether it accepts it. Check its rules too.
- For a driver's license, the police of some prefectures (the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, for example) accept only photos printed on photo paper. Check the rules of the prefecture where you apply.
- When the photo has too few pixels and would be blurred, no ID photo is made. When it has a few too few, the tool says so.
- One file can be up to 50 MB, and a picture up to 50 megapixels. HEIC (the photo format of iPhones) works only in browsers that can open it (mainly Safari).
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
