Questions

Is my video sent anywhere?

No. Reading the video and making it again both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a video.

How much smaller does it get?

That depends on the size and the amount of data of the original video. The tool shows the new size next to the original size before you save. When the new video is not smaller, nothing is made to save.

What happens to the quality?

The picture and the data get smaller, so the video looks rougher than the original. "A little (1080p)" looks best, and "A lot (480p)" is the smallest. The picture is never made larger than the original.

Why can the colors of an HDR video look dark and dull?

In Chrome on a computer and similar browsers, the tool cannot read the original color values of HDR videos from an iPhone (HEVC). It then cannot convert their range of brightness properly, so the colors of the result look darker and duller (the tool says so before making). To record ordinary (SDR) videos from now on, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video on the iPhone and turn off HDR Video.

What happens to the sound?

It goes in as it is, without being made again. Its quality does not change.

Which browsers can use it?

Browsers that can make videos again (WebCodecs): Chrome and Edge on computers and Android, Safari 16.4 or later on iPhone and Mac, and Firefox 130 or later on computers. Firefox on Android cannot.

Does the location or other hidden information stay?

No. The new video has only the picture and the sound. The location, the date it was taken, the device and other information are not included. But the sound data may carry the name of the app that made it (such as "Lavc58"), and that stays.

What is the saved file called?

"compressed.mp4", because the original file name often includes the date the video was taken.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Longer videos take longer. Keep this screen open while it works: if you switch to another screen, it may stop.
