Questions

Is my video sent anywhere?

No. Reading the video and making the GIF both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a video.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds. Longer GIFs make very large files, which often cannot be sent.

What happens to the quality?

A GIF can use only 256 colors, so the tool chooses 255 colors from this video and shows smooth colors with fine patterns of dots (dithering). Parts that do not move stay as in the frame before, so there is little flicker.

Why can the colors of an HDR video look dark and dull?

In Chrome on a computer and similar browsers, the tool cannot read the original color values of HDR videos from an iPhone (HEVC). It then cannot convert their range of brightness properly, so the colors of the result look darker and duller (the tool says so before making). To record ordinary (SDR) videos from now on, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video on the iPhone and turn off HDR Video.

How can I make the file smaller?

Choose a shorter part, a smaller width, or 10 frames per second.

Is the sound included?

No. GIF is a format that cannot hold sound.

Does the location or other hidden information stay?

No. The GIF has only the pictures. The location, the date it was taken, the device and other information are not included.

What is the saved file called?

"animation.gif", because the original file name often includes the date the video was taken.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Browsers that cannot make videos again (without WebCodecs) take the frames by moving through the video one frame at a time, which takes longer. A browser that cannot play the video cannot use it (the tool says so when the video is chosen).
