Questions
Is what I enter sent anywhere?
No. The barcode is made on your device.
If I make an EAN-13 (JAN) barcode, can I sell products with it?
Not by itself. The numbers of EAN, UPC and JAN codes are made from a GS1 company prefix that you register with GS1 (in Japan, GS1 Japan). This tool only turns the numbers you enter into a barcode; it cannot tell whether they are registered.
What is the check digit?
The last digit, which lets a scanner find misreadings. For EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A, enter the digits before it and the tool works it out and adds it. If you enter every digit, the tool checks the last one and tells you when it is wrong. For ITF-14, it is worked out again when the code is made from a JAN code (next question).
Can I make an ITF-14 from a JAN code?
Yes. Choose ITF-14, enter the JAN code (13 digits) and choose the indicator (1 to 8): the tool makes the 14 digits of the indicator, the first 12 digits of the JAN code and a new check digit, and writes the whole code under the field. You can also enter a whole 14-digit code. You choose the indicator yourself, one for each way the same product is packed together.
What size should I make it?
For EAN and UPC, the standard module width is 0.33 mm (magnification 1.0), and 0.8 to 2.0 times that is allowed. This tool uses the widths that fit whole pixels at 300 dpi (from 0.339 mm, magnification 1.03). If your printer or your customer has rules, follow them.
Should I use SVG or PNG?
For print designs, SVG is best: it stays sharp at any size. PNG is easy to paste into documents. The PNG says that it is 300 dpi, so many programs place it at its real size.
What are the start and stop characters of Codabar (NW-7)?
The characters at the beginning and the end of a Codabar barcode (one of A, B, C and D). If your delivery slips or library have rules, follow them; if not, use A.
What are the saved files called?
barcode.svg and barcode.png. What you enter is never used in the names.
Limits
- To sell products with EAN, UPC or ITF-14 barcodes, you need a GS1 company prefix (in Japan, from GS1 Japan).
- After printing a barcode, check that your scanner reads it.
- CODE128 takes up to 80 ASCII characters; CODE39 and Codabar take up to 40.
- No check digit is added to CODE39 and Codabar. If you need one, work it out and include it.
- The text under the bars is drawn with your device's font. In the SVG file, it is shown with the font of the program that opens it.
